How it works

  1. Step 1

    Give it a word

Your name, your subject, or nothing at all. Accents are folded to their plain letter and anything that is not a letter or a number drops out, so "Renée" becomes "renee". Leave the box empty and a short word is picked for you.

  2. Step 2

    Pick a vibe

7 to choose from, each with its own word lists and its own symbols, so a soft batch and a dark one do not read like the same batch wearing different punctuation. Switching vibe builds a new batch straight away.

  3. Step 3

    Copy the one you like

Tap any name to copy it. Register a plain handle as your @username, and keep the symbol and styled versions for the display name above your bio, which is the field that accepts them.

The two fields people mix up

Your @username and your display name are different fields with different rules, and an aesthetic name usually belongs in both — just not the same version of it. Getting this wrong is the single reason a name from a generator “does not work”.

The @username, or handle

This is the one in your profile link, the one people type to find you. Every major platform limits it to letters, numbers, periods and underscores: no symbols, no spaces, no styled letters. TikTok allows up to 24 characters and publishes one extra rule — it cannot end in a period — while Instagram and YouTube allow 30. The handles this tool generates are held to 24characters and checked against TikTok's rule, which is the strictest of the three, so a single name can be your name on all of them. That is worth more than any amount of decoration: one handle everywhere is one thing for people to remember.

The display name

This is the larger text above your bio, and it is far more relaxed: spaces, symbols, and the look-alike Unicode letters the styled rows produce. It is where a flower, a moon or a small star belongs. Keep one plain, searchable word in it as well, because platform search matches text rather than decoration — a display name made entirely of styled characters is a name nobody can find by typing it, and a screen reader may read it out letter by letter.

Why the symbols here are the dull ones

The symbols in this tool are drawn from the parts of Unicode that render as line drawings in the weight around them, rather than the parts that turn into colour emoji. That rules out several obvious picks: the heavy exclamation marks and the skull arrive as cartoons on most phones, and the familiar red heart is an emoji while the outlined one is not. A name that looks hand-drawn on a laptop and sprouts a cartoon on a phone is the real version of the “broken box” problem these tools are accused of.

Choosing one you will still like next year

A batch of 12 is a shortlist, not an answer. Three things separate a name you keep from one you change in six weeks.

Can someone type it from memory?

The test is not whether it looks good on the screen, it is whether a person who heard it once in a video can find you an hour later. Every period and underscore is a place to guess wrong, and trendy spellings date faster than anything else in a name. If you would have to spell it out loud, pick another.

Does it say what you post?

A handle that hints at the subject does work a bio cannot: it tells a stranger what they are about to get before they tap. That is what the suffixes in the clean vibe are for — a studio, a diary, a desk — and it is why a name built around your subject usually outlasts one built around a mood.

Is it actually free?

This tool invents names; it does not ask any platform whether they are taken, because no platform publishes an endpoint that answers. Take a handle you like to our Instagram or TikTok checker, which builds the profile link and opens it so you can see for yourself. And check it on the other networks before you commit to it anywhere — the whole value of a short, plain handle is being the same person on all of them.

Pro tips

  • Start from a word that already means something to you; a name assembled out of nothing is the hardest kind to remember.
  • Say the shortlist out loud. The one you stumble over is the one your audience will mistype.
  • Keep periods and underscores to one at most, and none if you can manage it.
  • Put the plain version in the @username field and save the symbols for the display name, which is the field that accepts them.
  • Leave one searchable word in your display name, because search matches letters and not decoration.
  • Preview a styled name on a phone before you commit: a laptop and a phone do not ship the same fonts.
  • Avoid numbers that only mean the good version was taken; a year or a birthday ages the name for you.
  • Check the same handle on every network you might use later, even the ones you have no plans for yet.
  • Look for an existing trademark before you build an audience on a name you may be asked to give up.
  • Generate a few batches before deciding. The first one is rarely the best one, and there is no limit.

FAQ

Is this aesthetic username generator free?

Yes. There is nothing to sign up for, no email to give, and no limit on how many batches you generate. The names are built in your browser rather than on our servers, so there is nothing for us to meter. We do keep a copy of the word you typed in, so we can see what people use the tool for.

Does it use AI?

No. Each name is assembled in your browser from the chosen vibe's own word lists and symbols, which is why a batch arrives the instant you press the button and why it works with no account. If you would rather a model invented them, the tool hands you a prompt written for Claude or ChatGPT, with the real handle rules already in it, so what comes back fits the fields you are going to paste it into.

Will these work as my actual TikTok or Instagram handle?

The ones under Handles will. They are held to 24 characters, the tightest of the three platforms this tool covers, kept to letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and checked against the one extra rule TikTok publishes: no period on the end. The Display names and Styled rows will not: those carry symbols and look-alike letters, which every @username field refuses. They belong in the display name above your bio.

Why do some symbol usernames show up as empty boxes?

Because the character was never on the device. A symbol is only drawn if the font covers it, and a generator reaching for an obscure code point gets an empty rectangle on an older phone. The symbols here come from the long-established parts of Unicode, and they are also chosen to stay as line drawings rather than turning into colour emoji — which is the version of this problem nobody warns you about, since the name does not look broken, it just looks like a cartoon.

Can I put styled letters in the username field?

No, and it is worth knowing why rather than just being told no. Those letters are not A to Z: they are separate Unicode characters that look like styled letters, borrowed from a block meant for mathematics. A username field accepts letters, numbers, periods and underscores and nothing else, so it refuses them. The display name is a free-text field, so it takes them happily.

Does a symbol or a styled font hurt how many people see me?

It can, in one specific way: search matches text, so a name made entirely of symbols or styled letters is a name people cannot find by typing it, and a screen reader may read it out character by character. Nothing suggests the feed treats you differently for it. Keep one plain, spellable word in your display name and put the decoration around it, and you lose nothing.

What makes an aesthetic username good rather than just pretty?

Someone who sees it once can type it from memory. That means short, easy to say, easy to spell, and ideally a hint at what you post. Decoration is the part you can change at any time, because the display name is editable; the handle is the part that ends up in links and in other people's screenshots, so it is the part worth being plain.

How do I know whether a name is already taken?

This tool does not check: no platform publishes an endpoint that answers, and scraping profile pages from our servers would get us blocked within a day. Take a handle you like to our Instagram handle checker or TikTok username checker instead. Each builds the profile link and opens it in a new tab, so you read the answer off what the platform shows: a profile means it is taken, and an account-not-found means it is probably free.

Why does the same word give me different names each time?

Because each batch is drawn fresh rather than stepped through a list. Plenty of generators rotate a fixed ring, so after eight or ten presses you are looking at the first batch again; here the prefixes, suffixes and symbols are drawn at random from the whole pool each time, with no repeats inside a batch. Keep pressing and you keep getting new ones.

Why did I get fewer than twelve names?

Because a long word leaves no room. Each name is a word of yours joined to one of the vibe's, and anything that would go past 24 characters is dropped rather than cut short — a name sliced mid-word reads as a mistake, not a style. A shorter word gets you the full batch; eight characters or fewer leaves room for all of them.

Do you store what I type?

We keep the single word you type in, once per visit, so we can see what the tool is used for. The names it produces are not stored, and nothing is sent anywhere while you type — the one record is sent after you press Generate. Nothing is shared with the platforms, and no account is involved.

Can I use one of these on every platform at once?

That is what the handles are built for. They are held to the tightest limit of the three, so the same name fits TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, and the display-name versions can decorate it differently on each one without the handle changing. Once it is yours, iHatePosting can post to all of them from one composer, so being one person everywhere is not fourteen separate jobs.
